ABOUT THE BAND:

Nidaros Brass Band was founded in 2003, by some brass band enthusiasts in Trondheim who shared a strong desire to play in a brass brand whose activity level was compatible with a busy lifestyle. By having rehearsals only every other Sunday, in addition to challenging and entertaining concerts, we have managed to maintain a capable and stable membership.
We have, the whole time, been committed to presenting music from different genres as well as possible to our audiences and we always showcase our own soloists in our concerts. We do not contest, and function purely as a concert band. The band has a good reputation as a concert band, with a lot of humour, joy of playing and high standard of musical performance.
Since 2008 we have put on a number of great concerts in Trondheim featuring well known soloists, both vocalists and instrumentalists. From UK we have played with Trevor Groom, Andrew Justice, Phillip McCann, Bob Childs and the great Steven Mead! All to great inspiration for the band members.
Of the highlights, we can mention the concert Trondhjemsnatt which has been played for a full church almost every year since 2008, Domen in collaboration with Nidaros Cathedral Boys Choir and Jan Magne Førde (2013), Lys (Light) in Nidaros Cathedral with world famous choir Cantus, and Frode Fjellheim (2015). Also fantastic concerts with Bob Childs; Britisk Aften (An British Evening) (2017), Vitae Lux (2019), with soloists Steven Mead and David Childs, respectively, Philip Harper and Tom Hutchinson (15 years anniversary concert) (2018), Firebird! with Ray Farr (2022) and The Lord of the Rings (2023) with Johan de Meij, have given us great musical moments!
The band has also made four UK tours, in 2011, 2014, 2017 and 2023 which have been great experiences and an inspiration for the members.
Equally important to playing large scale concerts and touring the home of the brass band, is for the band to perform concerts locally and in the Trondheim region, sometimes also with school bands.

Trondheim, which is located in the middle of Norway, was founded as Nidaros by Olav Tryggvason in 997, and had this name until the 17th century when the city became Trondhjem. After briefly reverting to the name Nidaros from 1930-31, the city name officially became Trondheim.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR:

GEIR ULSETH has been the band’s Musical Director since 2008, and has also played tuba in the band. He played in Ila Brass Band from 1987-2002, winning the Norwegian Championships with the band in 1989 and gaining victories at most other major brass band contests in Norway. Geir graduated in engineering from the Norwegian Institute of Technology, and later received further education in ensemble leadership, chamber music, and teaching methods, at NTNU in Trondheim. He did his national service as a tuba player in the Royal Norwegian Air Force Band in Trondheim. He has worked as a conductor and professional musician since 1993, playing tuba in the brass ensemble Quintus until autumn 2007. From 2003 to 2008 he worked for the Norwegian Band Federation (NMF) Trøndelag, first as a music consultant and later as general manager. From 2008-2015 he was in charge of music for NMF nationally and since January 2016 has been back at NMF Trøndelag, again as general manager.

Geir Ulseth has made a big contribution to the musical development and stability of the band. He is also an inspirational figure and a great resource for the Nidaros Brass Band's concerts.

New CD - Christmas in Nidaros (2016)

Since the band’s formation in 2003, we have always played our Christmas concert in the 300 year old ‘Rådhussalen’ in Trondheim’s public library. The concerts have included choirs, solo singers and readings, and we’ve presented varied Christmas music, traditional and modern Christmas songs, Christmas hits and carols to get the audience into the Christmas spirit. On this CD we have chosen to present a selection of our Christmas repertoire which we have featured over the years and we are especially pleased that Stine Mari Langstrand (Soprano) and Jan Magne Førde (Flugel Horn) could contribute to giving this Christmas CD the variety and festive atmosphere we always look for in our concerts. We hope you enjoy our new CD!

In 2010 we recorded a CD "Nidaros". The pieces chosen are representative of both repertoire and the soloists during our first 7 years.
You can purchase both CD's from this emailadress: cd@nidarosbrass.com. You can also get "Christmas in Nidaros" from World of Brass.
